Scouring

Three methods, one purpose – preparing cloth to perform at its best

Every fabric starts the same way: clean

Scouring removes the oils, dirt and processing residues left in cloth before finishing can begin – and how it’s done shapes everything that follows. We use three distinct scouring methods, chosen according to fibre and finish: a traditional wooden Dolly Scourer, still in daily use for the finest woollens because nothing else does the job as well; a Jet Scour for efficient, high-volume processing; and an environmentally considered Aqueous Scour, developed using our own design and engineering expertise. Investing in the right machinery for the right fabric has paid dividends for over a century.

Core Benefits

Designed for cleanliness, care and consistency.

  • Navy wool cloth ropes running through the wooden scouring trough

    Dolly Scouring

A traditional wooden scourer, kept in service for fine woollens because its gentle action can’t be replicated by newer machinery.

  • Wet navy cloth strands passing through the scouring machine's wash rollers

    Jet Scouring

A high-efficiency system built for consistent results at volume, without compromising fabric quality.

  • Crinkled dark wool cloth hanging from the rack of the scouring machine

    Aqueous Scouring

An environmentally considered process, developed in-house rather than bought off the shelf.

Our Other Finishing Processes

Our finishing processes allow each textile to relax to its natural width, ensuring optimal hang and fold
